Maximize Your Signal!

Your cellular phone has a "list" in it that tells it which cell towers to look for first.  This is called a PRL or Preferred Roaming List.  The PRL changes frequently as new towers are built and new roaming agreements with other cellular companies are made.  When the PRL changes, your cell phone doesn't know that it has changed.  To maximize your signal and coverage, you need to download the current PRL into your cell phone.

Dial *228, press Send from your wireless phone.  Follow the prompts. The service will tell you if it was upgraded successfully.

This idea is most important for travelers who are covering wider territories.  This is ONLY needed by those with Digital cell phones (CDMA or TDMA)  Analog cell phones do not adhere to a PRL.

Block Your Name/Number

To keep your cell number private, try using these free services:

  • *65 send PERMANENTLY blocks your name and number from caller ID. Your call will come across as "private" or "unknown."
  • *67 send blocks your name/number PER CALL
  • *85 send removes the permanent block and allows it to display again
  • *82 send unblocks per call, but leaves the permanent block alone

You can also call Alltel (1-800-alltel-1) and choose option 3 so your number displays but your name does not.  They can make "Alltel cellular" or "cellular call" display instead.
